Istanbul's New Airport .. The Meeting of Authenticity and Modernity



Its architectural style includes the cultural inventory of Istanbul and has won many international awards before its opening. It is being built on an area of ​​76.5 million square meters and will have an annual capacity of 200 million passengers.

 

Istanbul's new airport, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to open the first phase of it on the anniversary of founding of the Turkish Republic on October 29.

 

The airport will feature many of the first features in aviation and airports in terms of size, infrastructure, safety and security systems, and architectural aspects that combine authenticity and modernity.

 

The airport was built by the "İstanbul Grand Airport", which was formed on October 7, 2013, and consists of a joint venture of the companies of Limak, Kolin, Cengiz, Mapa and Kalyon.

 

The consortium of these companies won a bid to build, operate and transfer the airport at a cost of 26 billion and 140 million euros. the company continues construction work for 5 years.

The first phase of the airport worth 6 billion euros and is expected to provide 90 million passengers a year.

 

The airport will be opened gradually in 4 stages; the first at the end of the month with the participation of the Turkish President, and is expected to be completed in full in 2023.

 

Dozens of industrial facilities were built at the construction site of the airport, which includes about 3,000 heavy machines and more than 10,000 workers working in exceptional conditions 24 hours without interruption to complete the construction of the airport on time.

 

The BOT method was approved for the construction of the airport, which is expected to include 6 independent runways, a capacity of 500 aircraft at the same time, an open and closed garage with a capacity of 70,000 vehicles, and 200 Million passengers a year, to be named the largest airport around the world.

 

The design teams at the airport include more than 250 local and foreign architects specializing in different fields, and more than 500 engineers.

 

Following the airport entry into force, the operator company is expected to pay 1.05 billion euros a year, a total of 26 billion euros a year including VAT in 25 years, thus saving the state treasury about 176 billion Turkish liras.

 

On the first day of the opening of the first phase of the airport, which will be attended by prominent local and international figures, is expected to see the departure and landing of five flights.

 

Turkish Airlines announced that the destination of the domestic flights will be to the states of Ankara, Izmir and Antalya, while the international destination will be to Azerbaijan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

 

The airport authorities plan to complete the transfer from Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul by the end of this year, after which 2,000 aircraft will take off and land on a daily basis.

250 airlines will fly from Istanbul's new airport to more than 350 destinations around the world.

 

Istanbul's new airport has won many international awards before opening.

One of the first awards of the airport was the Control Tower designed by Pininfarina and Aecom, which was awarded the European Center for Architecture and Design in 2015.

 

The project received a design award in the category of future projects and infrastructure for the terminal building at the airport in 2016 by the management of the International Architecture Festival.

 

The Control Tower is inspired by Islamic and Turkish culture and Istanbul's Tulip, and will be one of the city's most visible landmarks for travelers to see.

 

The project's systems, including electricity, and the design of the airport building, won the European Center for Architecture and Design Award in 2015.

 

The airport's main terminal area is 1.3 million square meters, making it the largest airport building around the world.

The building's ceiling designers were inspired by the famous Ottoman architecture "Sinan".

 

The new Istanbul airport will pave the way for the Turkish economy to trigger a qualitative boom after its opening. The airport's share of Turkey's GDP is expected to reach 4.9% by 2025.

 

The airport will be connected to the city center of Istanbul with a modern and sophisticated metro network which is currently under construction.

 

It is also intended to make Istanbul's third airport offering the best services to its passengers around the world. Several new international standards have been identified for the taxi company contracted for the airport.

 

With regard to the information technology system, a joint stock company specialized in infrastructure and electronic programming services was established at the airport, employing about 780 Turkish engineers specialized in this field.

 

The Turkish company will rely on local and national programming and technology systems for all its work within the airport.

The airport will also feature the latest security and protection systems and ground radars for the first time.

 

The airport will be supplied with 9.000 surveillance cameras installed in accordance with the latest global systems.

Two different centers have been allocated for the security forces to ensure to be easily transported to the scene if required.

 

The airport will play an important role in achieving Turkey's economic goals of entering the list of the top 10 economies in the world by 2023, which is the first cent of founding the Turkish Republic.

 

Istanbul currently has two airports, one of which is Ataturk Airport in the European part, and the other is Sabiha Gokcen in the Asian side.
